Ways of Forming a Profitable Small Business

Friday, June 12th, 2009

There is nothing in the world more nerve-racking than starting a small business. Nothing, and that is the whole story. Although profitable small businesses do exist, and some inventive, lucky, and ambitious entrepreneurs do end up making a lot of money in the long run, it usually does take a very long time.

Profitable franchises and other small businesses are few and far between unless you have the right connections and a good deal of money to invest. This shouldn’t discourage you from trying to start your own profitable small business – it can be done. Nevertheless, the old saying “don’t put all your eggs in one basket” is especially true with regard to small-business profits.

The saying “if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is” comes to mind when I think about profitable small business, and this is true. There are many start-your-own business schemes that take advantage of people’s desire to make as much money as possible with as little effort.

There are people who fall for scams advertising profitable small businesses that are supposed to make you a lot of money a day while you sir at home. It’s not that I’m saying don’t check these opportunities out because you might find one that is legitimate. I am only suggesting you use your common sense more when your financial future is at stake.

It best to start your business with good advice and good sense. There are many small business entrepreneurs who are willing to share advice, and even resources with people who are trying to start a small business. That is why being part of a small business network is always helpful.

Profitable small businesses are often willing to work with others for mutual benefits which makes a small business network so useful for anyone who wants to succeed in the world of business.

Besides that, you need to make sure that you have a backup plan. If you can avoid it, don’t invest your own money too heavily. Getting investors is worth the effort.

Lots Of Competitors Or No Competitors - Which Is Better For Your Online Business?

Friday, June 5th, 2009

If you are a young entrepreneur or new to business then you not have though about this topic, you have probably just looked for niches without any kind of competition.

So which is better for your business - no competition, a little bit of competition or lots of competition?

Silly question I hear you shout! It is always better to have no competition of course (for example the image on the left). But seriously, I don’t think it is always better to have no competition, I think competition with other websites is a very good thing.

So Why Do I Think Competition Online Is A Positive Thing?

  • Link building is hugely important, if there are few other websites in your niche it’s not easy to build up targetted quality inbounds. You may try and get lots of links from websites in very similar niches but they may not be interested. The more websites in your niche the more quality links you should be able to get. EG look how many webmaster and “make money online” blogs link to each other.
  • Connecting with other webmasters is very important. Whether it is by email, msn or social media it doesn’t matter. The more competitors you have the more people to potentially connect with.
  • Competition will push you. Trying to beat other people brings out the very best in you. The more competition the harder you have to work. And the people that really make it are those always pushing (like a boxer fighting someone in a higher weight division). If you have very little or no competition you will probably sit back and think “hey I’m already the best in my niche” instead of pushing your business and improving profitability.
  • Ideas. With lots of competition webmasters are always looking to be noticed for being different. When you see what other entrepreneurs are doing it will often make you come up with other ideas sparked by what they’re doing.

When No Competition Is A Good Thing
For a company like text-link-ads it would be much better to have no competition. When you run a business which works on a simple business model which really can’t be altered that much (like selling text links) then less competition is definitely better.

Overall I think it is about having the right amount of competitors. You don’t want your small business to be in a niche where it is rammed with competition, but you do want some to connect with, get inbounds from and keep you on your toes and pushing your own business.

Basic Pointers On Company Incorporation

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

The following are simple tips on beginning a company incorporation:

- Benefits Of Incorporation: 1. You protect yourself and your personal assets from liabilities that may be incurred by your venture. 2. You get more tax credits and enjoy more tax deductions. 3. You give your company a separate juridical ‘personality’ that differs from the owner(s). You protect your company by placing it under a corporate ‘mantle’. 4. You expand your business and give it the required impetus for growth instead of restricting such growth by holding on to it. 5. You lengthen the lifespan of your company even if something happens to you or to the other owners of the venture. 6. You increase the capitalisation of your enterprise by getting more backers who will share the profits and losses.

- Place Of Incorporation: The state or country where you will incorporate your enterprise is also very important since there are locations that are more corporate-friendly than others. Make sure that you choose a state or country that will provide the maximum benefits for your company tax-wise.

- Research Your Market. The financial success of your company will rely on knowing the product or service you will sell. In order to grow successfully in any business you must know your industry. This will allow you to pick a name and a strategy for your business.

- Marketing: Define a clear marketing strategy. Getting publicity about the possibilities of your product or service is most important. Whatever way your strategy works, you should effectively and clearly expedite this sensitive task. If expenses are an issue, keep your marketing traditional; perhaps an advertisement in the yellow pages and passing out business cards.

- You Will Need An Accountant. Taxes, payroll, benefits, and fiscal years; these are just some of the items you should be familiar with to head up your business. They can be taken care of by a licensed accountant a good deal more effectively than attempting to juggle everything on your own.

- Be sure each partner’s responsibilities, benefits and role are clearly stated from the outset. You should also make sure your company has an exit strategy for each partner. This will protect all parties joining your enterprise.

- Keep your company issues and your personal life separate. Otherwise, you’re sabotaging the reasons you ever incorporated in the first place. If you have partners, it’s important to have a specific partner-exit strategy in place. It will define the buy-and-sell boundaries of a partner’s company interest. This can halt serious legal and financial issues from arising. Each procedure your business will follow needs to be drafted into the by-laws of your incorporation.

- Sole proprietorships or partnerships are taxed heavily compared to corporations which have lower taxes imposed. Corporations can also apply for a lot of tax deductions. This makes a big difference to their profitability.

I hope these few beginner pointers will assist you in beginning a small business incorporation.

Small Business Ideas

Friday, April 10th, 2009

Lots of people have small business ideas that they often fail to put into practice either because they lack the money to make an investment or because the fear to lose everything. Even the stage when you make up your mind about what to do to be in control of your life, job and career can prove extremely difficult sometimes. Before getting to act per se, analyze all the issues and aspects related to the implementation of several small business ideas.

Let us assume you want to work in the sale sector and try to promote a range of products, it is wise and safe to start with the promotion of one item only and then grow from there. Moreover, always choose to promote something you know lots of things about and that you know how to approach and present to others. There is a certain hidden sales psychological impact according to which your belief in the great features of the product is passed on to the customers, and this should set the line of conduct to only promote what you believe in.

Then, the dos and don’ts of basic marketing should always be considered when trying to apply all sorts of small business ideas. For example, the cash-flow projection for year in advance is necessary for any business that makes growth efforts. Then, spending a lot of money to start in a grand way could prove a fatal mistake when you lack a reputation and the credentials that help earn money. Stay low and take small steps without bringing about the risk of debt, mortgage or bankruptcy.

If you don’t know what small business ideas to put into practice, maybe it’s good to investigate the opportunities and see what suits your case best. There are people who resign before they have their own business ready to make money. Problems appear when things don’t turn out as expected and you cannot cope with the expenses or the competition.

Familiarity with the domain you take your small business ideas from is essential for smart investments. Such knowledge results from thorough personal documentation, from studies or from lots of working years in the field. Presently, there are even courses that assist people with their marketing difficulties, but such consultancy should be prior to the implementation of the small business ideas as such.

Startup Advice for Small Businesses

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

There’s an old Chinese proverb that says “a crisis is an opportunity riding a dangerous wind” - and that is how many are treating today’s lack of job security. The numbers of startup small businesses and the self employed are on the increase. Do it right, and it can be hugely rewarding. It can be wonderful to work hard and reap the rewards of that work yourself. But a huge number of startups fail within the first few years. So if you’re thinking about going down this road, it’s crucial to do things right.

Now I can’t claim to have an exhaustive list to follow. However speaking from personal experience I think these are a few of the most important factors for success:

  • Do something you enjoy. The path before you is going to throw you a lot of tough challenges. If you’re not passionate about what you do, chances are you won’t make it.
  • Get a pro to do your accounting. My advice is don’t go it alone when it comes to taxes unless you have experience with it - letting an accountant deal with it can really save a lot of hassle. Even if it’s only for the first year or so.
  • Think about your online presence. The net is your friend. Even if you’re not planning on selling online. There has never been a more effective way of getting leads and customers. Make sure you invest in a well made website. And look at search engine marketing in particular.
  • Get your branding & image right. This is frequently something that is done poorly at the start and then left untouched for many years. A good quality logo design can take you a long way. First impressions last, especially in these days of high competition and short attention spans. Have a look online for some examples of custom logo designs and go from there. Graphic design services have become a lot more affordable compared to a few years ago. Also get things like business cards and stationery design sorted out from the outset.
  • Learn from your competitiors. Then Improve on it. The wisest thing you can do is take a good long look at who your competitors are and how they do it. They have years of experience on you and you shouldn’t discount that. Then take it one step further and see what they aren’t doing but should be. Find yourself a Unique Selling Point, no matter how small. Without this no business can succeed.
  • Be intelligent with your marketing. You have plenty of options to look at for sources of advertising and marketing. But small businesses are notorious for throwing good money after bad on ineffective advertising techniques purely because they have no idea of how well they’re performing. Track where your customers are coming from as far as possible. With online marketing this can all be automated within an analytics package - but it can be as easy as asking your clients how they found you. Review every few months and act accordingly.

Hopefully this advice has been useful. Do drop a comment to suggest any other tips you may have!
