Home Based Business. Hints and Tips

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Sometimes it can be very difficult running a business from home. Especially if you are part of a family. Some good starting points to running a succesful business from home are as follows:

  • Dedicate a room in the house to run your business from. There is nothing worse for the family if there are piles of paperwork in different rooms in the house, and business paperwork can get mixed with personal paperwork and get lost.
  • If you have people calling your business by telephone, you need a dedicated phone line. This will stop confusion when the phone rings, with family members worrying about whether the call is business or personal. The last thing you need is teenage children answering the phone to your customers.
  • Sometimes it is very easy for a business to take over your life, especially when you do not leave the office behind at the end of the day. The business is in your home, and it is important to split business time and family time appropriately. When it is family time, remember to shut the office door and be disciplined.
  • Don’t slack if you are working from home. Even if you are going to be in the home all day, dress appropriately for business. Looking smart and feeling smart will help you act smart. Sitting in your shorts, or dressing gown will not get you in the right mindset to run a succesful business.

If you are just starting up, you should consider the following:

  • Your business should be an appropriate size if you are working from home. It is not good for family life if you try running a business which needs lots of space from the spare bedroom!
  • If your business includes holding stock, then make sure you have adequate storage! There is nothing worse than having boxes cluttering up your lounge or your kitchen.

And If You Are Looking For A Home Based Business Consider This:

  • A highly automated business can create time for you to spend with your family. A business which requires an immense amount of work can mean you neglect your family, and your lifestyle. Running a business can be as hard as you make it!
  • You should seriously consider the start up costs when running a business from home. If you purchase a franchise, it might cost you thousands of pounds, if you need to buy stock you might require a large initial outlay. The best home businesses are usually the simplist, and sometimes the cheapest!
  • If you require staff, think of the costs and commitments. Employed staff will require sickpay benefits, holiday pay, pensions etc. Consider a business which does not require you to take on staff unless they can be taken on a self employed basis. Especially in the early days because a company that is starting out does not need to be put under immense financial pressure.

If you are running a business from home, good luck, and thank you for reading!
